Ok. What I was trying to say was that patriotism shouldn't be dictated by money. If it is - then those people were never patriotic in the first instance. It is the same for any country. If people think that the EU is some type of the saviour, they are mistaken. The EU developed and continues to develop to meet the needs of Germany and a small core group of the countries. The smaller countries are compelled, cajoled and in essence forced to follow dictates from Germany.
An example, in Ireland a few years ago we had a referendum on an EU treaty (called the Lisbon Treaty) We voted to reject it. The government and the EU didn't like that democratic result so they told us the Irish people to vote again, literally. And even before the result of the referendum was known the European parliament voted not to recognise the result if Irish voted against it (as we did) We still voted no and they refused to recognize result. The Irish electorate were threatened and told to vote again and as the majority of people are sheep, they then voted in favour of the treaty the second time, because of fear, of threats and intimidation from our own government and EU. The EU can offer short-term profit, but long-term pain. It is a threat to small countries.
The EU are not to be trusted. It is not a true "union" in the real sense of the word, perhaps "reich" would be a better term.
A transformed European Union founded on mutual respect may be able to work, but a European Union which is controlled by Germany and their friends to the detriment of the smaller countries is, from my point of view, unacceptable.
