"Newbie" is a pretty common word used by Americans elsewhere on the Net and IRL. It's strange that you don't know it. As I understand, you're a linguist. Apparenly, Transnistrian State University trained. What regional dialect do you study there? BrE?

Two more questions, if you don't mind. What English textbooks do you use? What are you allowed to take for home reading?

Mostly, each of us learn English on their own. That gives the school - very little.

School gives enough to get you started. The rest of it depends on you. School just gives you a chance to do it free of charge. Autonomous learning (when you study on your own, without a teacher to control you) is a common practice if your aim is to become more or less fluent in a foreign language. What strikes me as odd is that the majority of school students skip foreign language classes, don't do their homework, are passive during the lessons - and eventually blame their poor foreign language command on teachers. This is just not fair.

Бывало, что приходилось лезть в интернет, чтобы расшифровать полученный text. I would also add 'FYI - for your information' to this list, as it is frequently used in all knids of electronic texts (SMS, e-mails, forums, etc.).

“FYI” is too simple ))))

I had a situation when I received an invitation for the call and it was said that call is set up for EDT 9.00 am , then I saw correspondence related to this call and noticed that they mentioned EST time as well .

In the end of all correspondence I noticed that actually this is 2.00 pm UK , or 2 pm GMT .

you felt like my brains start to boil ….



Also I remember my reaction when I received something like : please send me this doc by Tuesday COB .
Later I understood that this is close of business which means end of business day .

This isn't something you actually learn at school or university, because the majority of teachers have no idea of all these abbreviations, and how and when to use them. You can only learn something like that when you run into it working with native speakers or in the English-medium business environment.
